Gilbert Elks Community Service Highlights

June 1, 2011, Ellen Woodward, Treasurer of the Gilbert Elks Lodge #2848, presented a check for shipping expenses to Kathy Lewis, Founder of Packages From Home. Summer Leavitt presented Pat Petteruti, Loyal Knight, with a plaque made by David L. Llata, an Arizona Veteran, as a "Thank You" for the Lodge doing so much for Packages From Home. Jan Johnson, Supervisor of Packaging taught Pat Petteruti, Ellen Woodward, and Bill Woodward how to fill the boxes to be shipped.

May 21, 2011, Citizen Safety Forum & Expo - Gilbert Elks Lodge #2848 was invited to speak about Drug & Alcohol Awareness at the Central Christian Church in Glendale, Arizona for the Arizona Crime Prevention Association. The Elks sponsored two speakers from the notMYkid National Organization. Speakers included Tom Horne, Arizona Attorney and Bill Montgomery, Maricopa County Attorney. Vicky Owens (shown with J.R. Iannacone, ER), Crime Prevention Specialist, was Mistress of Ceremonies. Six members gave out coloring books, pamphlets, red ribbons, and Forget-Me-Not child safety information. 150 people attended.

May 12, 2011, Gilbert Elks Lodge #2848 Paid Tribute To Mothers At Mercy Hospital - promoting a child safety program called "Forget-Me-Not" by passing out literature and bumper stickers to remind everyone not to "forget" children in and around cars and water. In honor of Mother's Day and to continue to promote the "forget-Me-Not" child Safety program, the Elks gave packets with the information, along with silk forget-me-not flowers tied to a teddy bear, and a few personal items for 30 new mothers at Mercy Medical Center in Gilbert. Ellen Woodward, Bill Woodward, and Pat Petteruti (pictured left to right) brought the packets to Barb Farmer, Manager of Volunteer Services (pictured at right) who along with volunteer Jennifer Sullivan (not in picture) delivered them to the new mothers.

May 4, 2011, Most Valuable Student Scholarship Presentations - during Elks National Youth Week, Gilbert Elks Lodge #2848 awarded three Gilbert students a "Most Valuable Student Scholarship" grant to the college of their choice. Presentation was made by J. R. Iannnacone, President. The winners are Austin Tanner (ASU), Dallas Doane (BYU), and Lin Wang (ASU). Each year, high school seniors are eligible to submit an application for an Elks Scholarship.

April 2, 2011, Gilbert Elks set up a Drug Awareness booth at Falcon Field for the Mesa "Runways, Roads, and Rails" Event. The booth provided drug awareness literature, coloring books, and general Elks Club information. A specially prepared poster on display summarizing the regulations and drug testing required in the transportation business. Children were given the opportunity to sit in the cockpit of an aircraft and they received instructions on aircraft operation. After the aircraft demonstration, all tried on goggles that simulate two different kinds of drug and alcohol induced impairment. About 360 people visited the booth.

April 21, 2011, Gilbert Elks receive Youth Week Proclamation - Gilbert Mayor John Lewis presented a proclamation to the Gilbert Elks proclaiming the first week of May, 2011 as Elks National Youth Week. Our newest member, Jessica Cancel accepted on behalf of Gilbert Lodge #2848.

2010 Award For Best Lodge Bulletin - Gilbert Elks Lodge won a First Place award for "Lodge Bulletin Brochure Contest" for 2009-2010.

May 4, 2010, Most Valuable Student Scholarship Presentations - Bernie Kane, 2010 Exalted Ruler received a proclamation from Gilbert Mayor John Lewis proclaiming National Youth Week. Mr. Kane made an announcement to the 100 people in attendance that the Gilbert Elks are honored to present five $1,000 Most Valuable Student Scholarships to Gilbert students. The program is sponsored by The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks of The USA and funded by the Elks National Foundation. High school seniors are eligible to submit applications to be considered for this scholarship. The applications are then submitted to the nearest Elks Lodge where the process begins. Gilbert Elks Lodge #2848 received a record number of applications this year and were proud to have five of their sponsored students win scolarships. Elks give out more scholarship dollars to senior high school students than any other non-government organization. For the year 2010, scholarship awards totaled just under 3 million dollars. This year's Presentations were made JR Iannocone an Officer of the lodge on Thursday May 6th. We congratulate the following students (pictured left to right), Nathan Sema, Erika Handly, Taylor Lane, and Chelsea Sweeney. Kendall Kenopka will also receive the award, but was unable to attend that evening.

Nathan Sema, a Gilbert High School Graduate, will attend the U of A to pursue an Engineering Degree. Nathan has also been active in athletics.

Erika Handly, a Mesquite High School Graduate will attend BYU to pursue a Degree in Chemical Engineering. Erika has been a volunteer in the surgery/recovery department at Banner Desert Hospital.

Taylor Lane, a graduate of Highland High School will attend NAU. Her goal is to earn a Degree In Forensic Chemistry. Taylor has been certified as the youngest Search & Rescue Canine Handler in the country. She currently volunteers with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office in the Canine Search & Rescue Department and was credited with her first search & rescue find of 4 hikers in the Superstitions in January of 2010. Taylor also received the Prudential Presidential Community Service Award for over 1,000 hours of communty service in search & rescue activities.

Chelsea Sweeney is a graduate of Mesquite High School. Chelsea and will attend Honors College at U of A. Chelsea has been a leader in caring for the environment. She has conducted a weekly recycling program at school and has worked in community clean up projects for some time.

Kendall Konopka is a Marcos De Niza High School Graduate and will attend Point Lorna Nazarene College for Business in San Diego. He has broken a number of School and State records in baseball and will be on a baseball scholarship.

The Elks are proud to play a role in the futures of these exceptional youth. Bernie Kane the Exalted Ruler of the Gilbert Elks Lodge and all the Lodge members wish them every success.
