Gilbert Elks Members and Officers

Famous Elks ~ While the original Elks were actors and entertainers, members of other professions soon joined the B.P.O.E.  Over the past 150 years, many famous persons have joined the Elks,including Presidents Warren Harding, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, and Gerald Ford.   Many members of Congress have also been Elks, including former Speakers of the House Tip O'Neill, Carl Albert, John McCormick, Sam Rayburn, and Tom Foley.

General John Pershing was a lifelong member of New York Lodge Number 1. 70,000 Elks served in World War I and 1,000 gave their lives in the service of their country. 100,000 Elks served in World War II and more than 1,600 made the supreme sacrifice for American freedom.

Lawrence Welk, Will Rogers, Jack Benny, Andy Devine, William "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Clint Eastwood, Vince Lombardi, Casey Stengle, Mickey Mantle, and Whitey Ford are among many other famous celebrities who have been elks.
